The last one-cent coin, in circulation since 1858, was minted on May 4th. The coin had become a nuisance, weighing down consumers’ wallets and costing more to produce than it was worth. (via theeconomist)
We need to do the same w/ the U.S. penny. Same problems apply. Can’t even use it in vending machines, what a travesty.

On this day in 1994, Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa’s first black president. Mandela had spent 27 years imprisoned for working in the anti-apartheid movement.
